The Career Prospectors group helped me to get a shot in the arm right when I needed it. I think that one thing that doesn't always get mentioned about networking is positive feedback. As you share your elevator intro and tell people about your skills, you will receive some encouraging words. People who know me from my last job did not know the full extent of my background. After "introducing" myself, they would say "Wow, I didn't know you had done all of that", etc.

My "words of wisdom" would be the following:

1. Use ALL avenues in your job search. I found my job through an Internet web site. Granted, it is not the best avenue, but it should not be neglected. You can also get great networking ideas from web sites. My favorite web site is www.job-hunt.org - check it out if you have not seen it.
2. If you have Outplacement benefits, USE THEM. So many people from my company did not and they generally were out of work longer than the folks who did.
3. BEFORE networking, do an extensive re-do of your resume ( not just date changes). It will help you to reassess your strengths and prepare yourself for the follow-up questions that you will receive in your networking meetings.
4. NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK - When you are ready and organized, talk to people & expand your circle. It will create opportunities for you. In addition, I've also found that it helps to get you interviews more quickly.
5. STAY Positive - a group like Career Prospectors is essential. They can offer suggestions and help you to remember you're not in it by yourself.
